Rudd Family History
Recorded as Rudd, Ruddy, Ruddiman, Rudman and Rood, this is a very English surname. Dating from pre 8th century Anglo-Saxon times, it is either a topographical name for a person who lived by a "rood" or cross, or was a nickname applied to a person with red hair or with a ruddy complexion. The derivation is from the Old English pre 7th century word "rudig", meaning red, or ruddy. Early examples of the surname recordings showing the development over the centuries include: Richard atte Reode of Somerset in 1273, George Roode also spellt as Rudde, a student at Oxford University in 1554, and John Rood who married Susanna Sturton at St Georges Chapel, Hanover Square, Westminster, in 1790.Select Audience

Rudd
My mother wrote a note to me before she passed away advising that one of our relatives was the daughter of Lord Rudd of County Cork and I presume this was around mid 1800's. Lord Rudd married an actress and they died leaving their children (she thinks one was Thomas) in the care of their uncle who treated them cruelly and like servants. The son decided he wouldn't tolerate their treatment anymore and planned to travel to Australia. His sister begged to go with him and they somehow left Ireland and eventually settled in Maitland, NSW. The uncle died but it was years before they heard of his death. In those days correspondence between Ireland and Australia was difficult The uncle had denied them the privilege of being taught to read or write. The uncle was next in line and became Lord Rudd. The money from the estates passed into Chancery and the sister had the papers to prove the legality of their claim but all papers were lost in the 1900 floods in Maitland when they had to run from their home in the middle of the night without any of their possessions. By this time the brother had died and the sister was elderly and blind. The sister had married a John Moore and had three children Polly, John and David Moore. I would be interested in finding out who these people were and what happened when the uncle (?) became Lord Rudd. My name is Vivienne Cook
