This interesting surname, now widespread in the Leinster county of Wexford, was introduced into Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman Invasion (1169 - 1170). It derives from the Norman personal name "Raimund" or "Raimond", itself coming from the Old Germanic "Raginmund", a compound of the elements "ragin", counsel, plus "mund", protection. One Giraldus Reimundus was noted in the "Domesday Book" of 1086 for Essex, and Alexander Raymond (see below), was of the same stock as Raymond le Gros, one of the best known of the Anglo-Norman invaders. Well my father's YDNA is not in the R haplogroup we are I-L1498 and most of the YDNA matches to our REDMOND and surnames are in Northern Ireland. The estimation of this haplogroup is that it has been in Ireland for 5,000 years.

(Part 1 of 3) The Redmond name has a long history in the British Isles, but now DNA and some recorded history says its origin is from the south-west region of the Emerald Island. The Redmond story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup O2] can trace their beginnings to what is now County Kerry from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Redmond surname origin is possibly a branch of what will become the Dรกirine [R1b-L513] who are found in south Ireland around 300 CE.

Recent discoveries from DNA testing are unlocking the migration patterns of Celtic tribes as late as 800 CE to 1200 CE.
