McGowan Family History
McGowan (MacGowan) is an Irish and Scottish surname. It stems from "Mac Gobhann" in Scotland and "Mac" or "O'Gabhann" from Ireland both meaning "iron worker".Select Audience

Bridget McGowan
I am looking for the origins of my McGowan family. Father Thomas McGowan with his wife Catherine and several children came to the US before 1850, originally staying in Taunton, Rhode Island. Children I know of: James, Thomas, Ann, Elizabeth, Hannorah, William, and possibly Catherine (although her dates make it more likely she was a granddaughter). Thomas died before the family migrated to south central Wisconsin. There is family lore that part of the family settled in Ohio on the way and they never connected again. James' obituary says he was from Sligo. I cannot find any records in Ireland.
Kenneth Kooter
Hello,
my Name is Kenneth Kooter (born as Menrad) 25.03.1978, my father was Kenneth McGowan, he was in the 1970`s stationed in Germany in Brรผggen (air clutch fields).
My mother told me these last year November on her Deathbed, that explained a lot. But i dont know very much above my roots.
Maybe some one could help me.
Best regards
Kenneth Kooter

I am trying to find the ancestry of my 3rd great grandfather William McGowan from Ireland. He was born around 1806. He immigrated from Ireland to Canada, with a family legend that his brother was with him but went on and he never saw him again. Some of us have had our DNA done and see evidence of our line in Canada, of course, but also in Australia. There is possibility that William left a family in Ireland, with a wife named Mary Ann" and just started a new one in Canada. William's granddaughter, Alexandra, immigrated to the USA and settled in the Mojave desert. She was my great grandmother.

Barbara McGowan and Richard McConnochie lived in Ardrossan, Scotland and had a daughter Isobella McConnochie abt Jul 1828, my 2nd great grandmother. They also had daughter Mary Ann (1831) and Barbara (1833), possibly others. Isobella married William McNeely abt 1848 and moved to Kilbirnie, Scotland. sometime before 1860 they moved to America.

I am searching information on Barbara McGowan who married a Richard Mcconnochie 21 Jan 1826 at Parish Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland. Several family trees on Ancestry have a Barbara Mcgugan married to a Richard Mcconnochie but I don't think she is the same but cannot prove it. Is Mcgugan and McGowan possibly the same person or are these name interchangeable?

Is it possible that my relative born in Banffshire, Scotland, George McGowan June 25, 1845, had family roots in Ireland? He named Burns, Oregon in the United States.

I am trying to find any family info on my GG Grandfather James McGowan born 1790 approx from Pulladohey County Mayo area. He was sent to Australia in 1818 as a convict. I know nothing about his family in Ireland. His wife was Mary. She followed a few years later with their children.
Robert Stanley McGowan
My paternal grandfather was Thomas McGowan. He was born in Hammond, Indiana in the 1880s. His father, John McGowan may have been from Ireland - or possibly his grandfather who lived in Mount Savage, Maryland around the time of the American Civil War. Thomas was a Cavalryman who served with US Forces in the Philippines and maybe during the Spanish-American War. Family lore has it that the McGowans came to the US from Donegal.

Trying to find info regarding my MGF, William Samuel McGowan who was born 12-28-1880 somewhere in Ireland. His father was Joseph McGowan and his mother was Mary Ann Dycher McGowan. He was reportedly born in Cloydah, near Dublin. He was baptised at the Cloydah Church by the Reverend Tho R. Greene. This was in the Diocese of Seighlin. Any and all info will be greatly appreciated.
