Melia Family History
This interesting surname is of early Irish origins. It is a developed form of the Gaelic O'Maille, meaning the male descendant of the nobleman, from "mal", prince or champion. Traditionally, Irish family names are taken from the heads of tribes, revered elders, or from some illustrious warrior, and are usually prefixed by "O", grandson, male descendant, or "M(a)c", denoting "son of". The surname belonged exclusively in the past to County Mayo, and this is almost equally true of the present day: over eighty five per cent of the births recorded are in Connacht and most of these are in County Mayo...Select Audience

Melia
My name is Kathy Hubbley, born in Liverpool, England, now living in New York. My mother was Teresa Melia, youngest of 10 born to James and Mary Ann Connor Melia in Liverpool. My great grandfather was James Melia born 1851 in Mayo, Connaught, Ireland. My great grandmother was Mary Timoney Melia born in 1851 in Devonish, Fermaugh, Ireland. They migrated to Liverpool where they married.

My great grandfather was John melia born 1877 county Durham England his father was William who on the 1891 census states he was also born in county Durham England I honestly think that he was born in Ireland and maybe just added county Durham England for reasons unknown

My great-grandmother was Ellen Melia. She was born in Shncliffe, Durham. She was one of 7 sisters all born 1855-71. Her older sisters were born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Her parents were John Melia & Margaret McHugh & married in Chesterfield, Derbyshire also. John Melia was born in Westport, Mayo & his wife in Galway. I am interested to find out whether the name was really 'Mally' or 'O'Malley when they were in Ireland? I have a copy of John & Margaret's marriage certificate & neither of them could write (as was the case in those days) I'm wondering if there are any other Melias from Derbyshire.
