Kynsey Family History
A surname of English origin, it may derive from the Anglo-Saxon personal name 'Cynesige' – 'cyne' meaning royal and 'sige' meaning victory.
It is possible however that it developed into a surname from an association with a place or locality, for example from 'Kilnsea', a parish in East Yorkshire, or places called Kinsey in Cheshire and Lancashire.
One of the earliest recorded examples of the surname include William Kynnesay, who was the vicar of Hitcham, Norfolk in 1471; George Kynsey who was listed in the Sussex Subsidy Rolls of 1525; and Robert Kensay, who was recorded on the Patent Rolls of 1558.
The Kinsey name is associated with several parts of Wales located near to the English border, in particular the county of Montgomeryshire where the surname was already apparent on parishes registers, including that of Llandinam, during the late 16th century. By the 18th century the surname was also well established in the Welsh counties of Radnorshire and Breconshire, where it remained evident on parish registers and on census records during the 19th century.
In some cases, Kinsey is also be a contraction of the Scottish and Irish surname Mckenzie.
