DUFF Family History
This unusual name, with the variants spellings Dow, Dove and Dew, is of Scottish (and sometimes Irish) Gaelic origin, and is the Anglicized form of the Gaelic word "dubh", dark, black, in Old Gaelic spelt as "dub". This word was frequently used as a personal name, by itself or as a shortened form of a longer double-stemmed name, and as a nickname or byname for a swarthy man, or perhaps for someone of a "dark" temperament. A sizeable group of early European surnames were gradually created from the habitual use of nicknames.Select Audience

Tony (Duff) Dickens
Hello, Im Tony - great grandmother was Sallie Duff and we have a clan settlement and a few Duff cemetaries, with my family ancestors buried on the mountaintop clearing cemetary - about 15 miles north of Charleston WV. Our Duff line settled at the time of the indiana territory (1820s earliest local birth record ive found) when natives were hostile - and the Duff women wounded them so badly we were left alone. I run the MacDuff tent and serve as deep south regional convener for clan macduff soceity of america inc currently. But Im a Duff, not a MacDuff. We are Scottish Duff with some Highland / Patrick afiliation.

Francis Duff emigrated in the early 1790's from Donegal, Ireland with a large group of other Irish Catholics. Many were from Templecrone Parish if not all of them. They settled on large farms in Butler and Armstrong Counties PA and built the 1st Catholic Church west of the Allegheny Mountains which still stands as St Patrick's Church Sugar Creek Armstrong Co, PA.

My Duff family comes from Baltimore, Maryland. My 3rd great-grandmother was Catherine Duff, who lived in Maryland. She married John Blake (also Irish) in 1822 in Baltimore. I don't know who Catherine's parents were or what part of Ireland the family comes from.

I'm a descendant of a Duff who came to Trinidad in the 20th century.I was told he was an Overseer of an Estate in the Southern part of the Island. One of his sons was my Grandfather Albert.Hoping to learn more about the Duffs and their origin.

Trying to trace back an Arthur Duff, born 1793, who possibly stowed away on a boat to NFLD and arrived with his mother in Holyrood sometime between 1801-1810 we believe after his siblings and father were killed

(Part 1 of 3) The Duff, Duffy, MacDuff, Kilduff and Black names can be found throughout Ireland and Scotland, but its origin according to DNA is from the north-west coast of the Emerald Island. The Duff story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup A1] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Duff surname origin which means black is from a Northern Ui Neill [R1b-L513] tribe. The Cenรฉl Eoghan and the tribes of Donegal conquered much of Ulster (Derry and Tyrone).
Anthony Barrett
(Part 2 of 3) Cenรฉl Eoghan will expand across northern Ireland with their cousins Cenรฉl Conaill and the Northern Ui Neill between 500-800 BCE. The clans of Finn Valley have the same DNA as people from Gwynedd in Brittany. But how could this be? Recent discoveries from DNA testing are unlocking the migration patterns of Celtic tribes as late as 800 CE to 1200 CE. This Duff story begins in pre-history Ireland then moves to Scotland as they form part of the Dalriada. Descendants of their tribe will then travel to Brittany, France during the Dark Ages.

(Part 3 of 3) Discover their newly found untold story and how forgotten texts bring their story back to life. From the ebook, โThe Tribe Withinโ learn how DNA unfolds this amazing tale and if you look in the right places, how history narrates this evidence. There is another written account of their story, but it is camouflaged in smoke and myth โ it will become the tales of King Arthur.
